With malls, museums and countless maritime adventures, Perth is one of the biggest and busiest cities in Western Australia. But what about those who’d like to escape the city limits for something new? What attractions are close enough for a day trip without requiring an overnight stay? Here are five ideas for travel outside Perth.

1: The Beaches of Rockingham

Less than an hour’s drive from Perth, Rockingham offers some of the most beautiful beaches down under. Swim, surf and sun at Point Peron; enjoy the waves smashing onto the rocks at Secret Harbour Beach; watch the happy waddling of fairy penguins on Penguin Island. There are also plenty of restaurants and souvenir shops lining the coast, perfect for picking up gifts and goodies for everyone back home.

2: Shopping at Mandurah

The shopping districts of Mandurah will prove a mighty temptation for travelers with a few extra dollars in their pocket. Not only are there stores, boutiques, cafes and galleries as far as the eye can see, but the roads are always packed, too, with vendors and street performers offering grand entertainment in all forms.

3: Flying High Over Rotto

Anyone can drive around an island, but how many people can say flew over it, tasting the clouds and leaning over the edge of the world? Rottnest Island is famous for its hot air balloon tours, so for anyone keen to experience Australia as they never have before, this is the place to do it. No special training is required to go up, just an appointment, a navigator and a few quick safety precautions. Clear an afternoon, climb in the basket and take flight to enjoy stunning aerial views of Rotto, Perth and beyond.

4: Whale Watching in Fremantle

Humpback whales make an annual journey from the frigid waters of Antarctica to the warmer seas of the north. On their way home, during the months of November and December, they pass by the coasts of Perth and Fremantle, offering a close, breathtaking look at some of nature’s most majestic creatures. Spectators can watch them from the shore or from the decks of a day cruise ship; either way, it’s a sight that isn’t easily forgotten, so don’t forget a camera.
[Edited: Note we’ve been notified that whale watching season is over this year. But definitely keep it in mind for next year– it’s truly unforgettable!]

5: Working Up A Sweat in Armadale

The modern worker gets little relief from their dependency on technology and caffeine, so a trip to the heart of nature may be just what the doctor ordered. With more than 25 walking, biking and hiking trails to choose from, trekking through the wilderness of Armadale is a great way to let go of stress and recharge one’s batteries.
